1. Where do you rest your head?
South east London.
2. What’s something amazing about your area that only the locals know about?
Kate Bush wrote The Kick Inside while living on Wickham Road in Brockley. I don’t know if locals know this, I found out via an Instagram reel quite recently.
3. Where’s your favourite local spot for a cheap bite to eat?
There’s not much that’s truly cheap (and good) in my immediate area besides my local chicken shop, of which I am a regular and very satisfied customer. In wider SE London you would be hard pressed to beat the infamous Falafel & Shawarma in Camberwell for value and quality. For a sit down meal, I am a new and enthusiastic fan of Kish Mish in Crystal Palace, which offers an incredibly reasonable and delicious lunch menu.
This is not a current local spot, but was an old local spot: Niyazi Usta Artisan Bakery on Roman Road. I love their £3 Turkish pastries or £5-6 gözleme with a black coffee at lunchtime.
4. Any other local businesses you’d like to shout about?
DOMA in Forest Hill / Sydenham - the warmest atmosphere and the best burek, grill and cherry pie you will ever taste. Also, Cantinera in Brockley is one of the most exciting new restaurants in the area, or maybe the whole city. It’s tiny and gorgeous and every morsel is delicious, and it’s BYOB.
5. Where’s your favourite free place to visit in the city?
The parks! London parks are so good and so plentiful, especially in south east. The ‘Three Peaks’ walk is a fun route that ticks off a few of them - Hilly Fields, One Tree Hill, Blythe Hill Fields, and passes by a number of excellent pubs (not free) if you wish. Dulwich Park is also beautiful and walking distance from another great free South East London attraction, The Horniman Museum & Gardens.
Further afield, I love Highgate Woods, Highgate Cemetery (though I never really make it in here because it doesn’t allow dogs, and what is the point of a walk without my dog?) and Highgate village into Hampstead Heath.
6. What would your perfect no-spend London day entail?
Staying in my house doing a jigsaw and watching three to five films back to back. If I had to go out though, I would make a packed lunch then go to Deptford and do the Thames Path walk to Greenwich, or maybe visit Nunhead Cemetery for one of their open days or free bat walks.
7. Tell us about your Good Time Girl newsletter (we love it!). What made you want to start it and where do you get your inspiration for things to write about?
After much consideration and a couple of years of putting it off because I didn’t know what to write about, Good Time Girl began life in a strict format where I would post a weekly series of ‘good’ things - a good film, playlist, skincare product, compliment I had received, picture of my dog, whatever - with explanations as to why I found them ‘good’. I quickly realised that this was too restrictive and abandoned the format altogether.
Now I write about more or less anything, harking back to the earlier days of my online career as a blogger. I do a regular ‘monthly favourites’ which broadly covers my initial intentions with the newsletter, and for the remaining three or four letters per month I write about anything from my favourite London ‘cheap eats’ to film recs and reviews to lists of things I find embarrassing even though they shouldn't be.
8. As a freelancer, do you have a favourite London spot for writing or creating content?
I mostly write from home at the kitchen table or on the sofa with my dog. A lot of my content is about places - things to do, eat, see, watch, wear, experience, etc - in the city, so I create content from wherever that place happens to be.
9. If you were Mayor of London, what’s the first thing you’d change about the city?
Give all pubs, bars and music venues late licenses and ban noise complaints from anyone who chose to move in next to a pub, bar or music venue in zones 1-2. Also give anyone who leaves a Lime Bike obstructing a footpath a lifetime ban.
10. In three words, what makes someone a Londoner?
Being from London.
